Begin your holiday with a pleasant flight to Darwin, the largest city in the Northern Territory. Darwin is a multicultural city that boasts a population made up of people from more than 60 nationalities and 70 different ethnic backgrounds. Upon arrival, begin a city tour of Darwin where you’ll drive past Waterfront Precinct, George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, East Point Military Precinct and Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Depart Darwin and travel across Adelaide River and Marrakai Plains into World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park. Covering some 20,000 square kilometres, Kakadu is Australia's largest and arguably most famous national park. Kakadu's vast wetlands and ancient escarpment are home to one of Australia's largest and most diverse bird populations, supporting up to one-third of all Australian bird species. See some of the most amazing terrains Australia has to offer on your way to and inside Kakadu. Marvel at the bevy of rock art sites that illustrate Aboriginal culture, some dating as far back as 50,000 years. Next, proceed to Adelaide River, home to over 1,600 crocodiles and site of the famous jumping crocodiles. A Jumping Crocodile Cruise takes you on the Adelaide River to educate you on crocodile biology, territorial habits, and their value to the eco system. Cruise the river and enjoy the thrill as these awesome creatures launch themselves out of the water, which will enable you to see these prehistoric creatures at close range. Thereafter, learn about Kakadu at the Bowali Visitor Centre, where you will have some time to view and purchase local arts and artefacts. Thereafter, explore the floodplains of Ubirr, home to important Aboriginal rock painting sites thousands of years old.
Set off from your hotel and start your day tour around Australia's largest National Park, Kakadu. Go on a Yellow Water Cruise – the perfect way to search for the saltwater crocodiles and colourful birdlife this landlocked billabong is famous for! Next, visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre to see the informative displays depicting the traditions of Kakadu Aboriginal culture. Afterwards, continue to Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve to view a wetland ecosystem up close without getting your feet wet. Home to a monsoon and floodplain wildlife refuge, stroll along boardwalks and stop at lookouts to spot a variety of birds, water pythons, freshwater turtles and other wildlife in this birdwatcher’s paradise.
This morning, travel to Litchfield National Park via the township of Batchelor to witness a kaleidoscope of colours – thanks to the several stunning waterfalls that cascade into crystal clear pools, iconic magnetic termite mounds and clusters of weathered sandstone pillars at the Lost City. The Magnetic Termite Mounds are the incredible architectural works of local termites which are found inside this national park. Take in the splendour of thundering waterfalls, rainforest pockets and historic sacred sites in this haven for hundreds of native bird species, while the plateau supports a rich range of woodland flora. The traditional custodians of the Park are the Wagait people, many of whom still call the area home. View the spectacular Florence Falls from a high vantage point, before making your way down to the plunge pool below for a swim (conditions permitting). Next, venture to Wangi Falls, where you’ll have another opportunity for a dip in the large crystal clear pool.
Enjoy the day at your leisure and explore the streets of Darwin at your own pace. Darwin’s year-round warm weather creates a relaxed atmosphere and is perfect for those who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle as the city is also easily accessible by foot. Much of Darwin’s action happens along its waterfront situated on the edge of a harbour that’s thriving with restaurants, shops and parklands.
Spend the morning at leisure before boarding your home-bound flight. We hope you enjoyed your vacation with our company and we look forward to seeing you again on your next trip.
